School Trips Wales: Mountaineering
School Trips Wales: Mountaineering
For mountaineering opportunities School Trips Wales offers some of the most outstanding locations in Wales. Operational outdoor education centres such as the Brecon Beacons and Snowdonia centres offer immediate access to the spectacular Brecon Beacons and Snowdonia Nation Parks. This is the perfect environment for pupils to learn how to look after their own physical and mental wellbeing.
This activity has an option for overnight expeditions can be used to support the ‘healthy lifestyles’ element of Personal Learning and Thinking Skills (PLTS) within the national curriculum. In our operational centres in Pembrokeshire pupils will have the opportunity to take part in coastal treks that follow the most beautiful coastline in Wales. Coastal treks provide a great chance to encounter rarely seen wildlife sheltering in hidden coves and sea caves.
In our North Wales residential outdoor education locations you will also have excellent opportunity to explore Snowdonia and some of the less walked mountain routes. Our instructors are widely experienced and have travelled extensively around the mountainous regions of the world. Under the guidance of our qualified mountain leaders, Pupils will learn how to equip themselves and stay safe in this challenging environment. The emphasis will be on experiential learning that will provide opportunities for pupils to learn new skills, such as navigation, knowledge of the natural environment, fauna and flora, and awareness of the effects of mountains on the weather. A day in the mountains will enable them to look after their own wellbeing as well as the welfare of others more sensitively.
In addition to these important life skills, learning will also be linked directly to school subjects such as geography, geology and history . There are a number of historic sites in the area, such as hillforts, castles and WWII aircraft crash sites. The mountains have so much learning to offer, but most of all they will have the opportunity to experience some of the most stunning scenery in Wales.
Taking pupils into the mountains lets them develop a lifelong relationship with nature. It is a chance for your pupils to flourish and explore natural surroundings they aren’t familiar with. They get to escape the endless mirage of concrete buildings and technology and witness how beautiful it actually is to be outside. Nothing makes you appreciate something more than experiencing it first-hand.
Pupils are sure to see and get curious about lots of things while in the mountains. They will be able to hear, smell, see, taste and feel things they didn’t usually experience. Our instructors have extensive of knowledge to share with your pupils about the mountain’s and their flora and fauna. They can teach them the importance of the environment and some basic survival skills. It’s also a great time to practice the principles of ‘leave no trace’, pupils will learn best through a real outdoor experience. Mountain trails often allow them to encounter many birds, animals and plants that they would otherwise see only in books or online.
However, the true benefits of exploring the hills and mountains go much deeper than an appreciation for the environment and improved fitness (although these are also both of great value), the increased confidence, resilience and self-reliance that will develop in your pupils will have a hugely positive impact on their personal development. We have access to the best mountaineering routes in the mountains of Snowdonia in the North Wales locations, Mid-Wales and Shropshire provide us with some of the half day treks on the Stretton Hills and in South Wales and Pembrokeshire we have The Brecon Beacons and The Preseli Mountains.
